No matter where you live in the U.S., if you want to host a garage sale within city limits, chances are good you'll need a garage sale permit.
Why Do I Need A Garage Sale Permit?
Cities use Garage Sale permits to protect citizens and prevent blight. The registration of residential sales has been shown to deter unlicensed business operations and the sale of stolen goods. Garage Sale Permits also guard against seemingly perpetual sales and large concentrations of garage sales that may otherwise become a nuisance or eyesore.
How Much Does a Garage Sale Permit Cost?
The average fee for a garage sale permit is around $5, with costs ranging anywhere from $0 — $20. For your convenience, many cities will add the fee to your water bill if your account is in good standing.
What Will Happen If I Forget to Get A Permit?
If you host a garage sale without a required license, you could be fined as much as $250 depending on where you live.
What Rules Or Restrictions Apply to Garage Sales?
It varies from city to city, but typical restrictions may include:
- A limit on the number of consecutive days you can host a garage sale
- Specific hours of the day you can be open for business
- The total number of garage sales you can host per year
- How often you can host a garage sale
- How many signs; what size and where and when signs are allowed
- What you can sell
Where Can I Get a Garage Sale Permit?
Garage Sale permits are almost always obtained through City Hall -- usually from the City Clerk's office, Utilities, Permits Division or Code Enforcement. You can purchase a permit in-person and in some cases over-the-phone and online. Some cities also make garage sale permits available at the local newspaper office or Chamber of Commerce.
If you live outside Oklahoma, check with your local City Hall to find out if you're required to apply for a garage sale permit and what options are available for you to purchase one.
Do I Need A Garage Sale Permit in Oklahoma?
While specifics vary, many cities and towns in Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, Norman, Lawton and Moore, require a Garage Sale Permit for every residential sale held within city limits. Residences located outside city boundaries are exempt.

Be sure to display your garage sale permit number on your Garage Sale Signs and display it someplace prominent at your sale.
Most cities in Oklahoma waive the permit fee for City Wide Garage Sales. Some also issue Rain Checks.
