How Kids Shoe Sizes Work

Kids shoe sizing is very different from the numbering system we use for adults. Here's what you need to know:

KIDS SHOE SIZES ARE UNISEX

Unlike Men and Women's sizes which are different for each gender, kids shoe sizes are gender neutral. There's no difference between a boy's size 10 and a girl's size 10 sneaker.

KIDS SHOE SIZES ARE CATEGORIZED BY AGE

As a general guideline, each kids shoe size is assigned to an age group. It tells you the age range of kids who typically wear that size shoe.

Our printable kids shoe size chart is divided into five age group categories used by the majority of kids shoe brands and retailers:

Baby Shoes.................... Age  0 - 12 months
Walker Shoes................ Age 12 - 24 months
Toddler Shoes............... Age  2 -  4 years
Little Kid Shoes............ Age  4 -  8 years
Big Kid Shoes................ Age 12 - 12 years

*It's important to note, however, that the age category is nothing more than a good jumping off point. Since kids grow in spurts and every child is different, you don't want to buy footwear based on age, alone.

KIDS SHOE SIZES ACTUALLY CORRESPOND TO FOOT LENGTH, NOT AGE

A size 4T shirt may be designed to fit 4-year-olds, but size 4 shoes are not.  Kids shoe sizes DON'T correspond to age in the same way clothing sizes do.  Each Kid's shoe size refers to shoes that fit a specific length of foot, instead.

Size 4 Kids, for example,  fit children's feet that measure 8 3/4 inches in length, which will typically be kids between 8 and 12-years-old.

That's why you need a printable kids shoe size chart.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LITTLE KID AND BIG KID SHOE SIZES

If you have trouble figuring out the difference between little kid and big kid shoe sizes, you're not alone. It's confusing because they overlap. I know. Right?

Kids shoe sizes run from 0 to size 12 1/2, then start over again at size 1 through 7! That's not a problem if you're shopping in person for a size 5 shoe for your 12-month-old. It's easy to tell little bitty shoes apart from big kids'. But take care not to accidentally grab the wrong size when you shop for a larger pair. The size difference may not be so obvious.

LITTLE KID VS BIG KID SHOE SIZE

DIFFERENT BRANDS USE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE

Many brands and retailers designate the age group of some shoe sizes with a letter. However, not all companies use the same lettering system.

Toddler sizes are usually labeled with a "T" for "toddler" (8T, 9T etc.) but some companies use a "K" for kids. Big kid sizes are often followed by a "C" for "child" or "Y" for "youth."

The language brands use to describe age groups is also inconsistent, "Preschool" vs. "Little Kids," for example.

MOMMY KNOWS BEST
All told it seems the best course of action is to measure your child's foot and use a simple conversion chart to find the right kids shoe size. If you can get a shoe size chart for the specific brand you're considering, that's even better.

Once you find a pair, you'll need to have your kid try them on so you can check the fit since there's no universal size system for kids shoes.

Good luck! May the shoe shopping odds be ever in your favor.
