Most Craigslist users are trustworthy and well-intentioned and the vast majority of eCommerce deals in the U.S. go off without a hitch. Unfortunately, a small percentage have also resulted in scams, robberies and even assaults. 

Please be safe when you buy and sell on Craigslist and similar websites like Offer Up and Facebook Marketplace. Exercise common-sense precautions and make your exchange in a well-lit public place with cameras and/or law enforcement present.



Do's and Don'ts for Safe Craigslist Deals

  • DO insist on meeting during the day at a busy public place with cameras or at a designated Craigslist Safe Exchange Zone like those listed here.*
  • DON'T meet a Craigslist buyer or seller at a secluded location, at your home or in a random parking lot (including Wal Mart parking lot.)
  • DO take a friend with you and tell another friend or family member where and when you'll be making a Craigslist exchange.
  • DON'T carry a lot of money on you. Use a money order or an app like PayPal or Venmo to pay for your Craigslist find, instead.
  • DO exercise greater caution when buying or selling expensive items and be especially wary of any Craigslist deal that seems "too good to be true."
  • DON'T get into a person's car or invite them into yours to do a Craigslist deal.
  • DO take time to Google the person you're meeting, as well as the item you're buying.
  • DON'T accept a last-minute change in meeting location under any circumstances.
  • DO trust your instincts and call off  a Craigslist deal if it doesn't feel right. 


* [NOTE] If it's not feasible to bring your item to a designated Craigslist Safe Exchange Zone (if it's too big and heavy, for example) then do what you can to have the item waiting outside your home for the exchange.
